# Chennai Mathematical Institute Entrance Examination

Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences. CMI is managed by a Governing Council consisting of eminent persons. The main areas of research at CMI are Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. In addition to a vibrant PhD programme, the Institute conducts BSc programmes in Mathematics and Computer Science as well as Mathematics and Physics, along with MSc programmes in Mathematics, Applications of Mathematics and Computer Science. Today, CMI is a rare example of public-private partnership in research and education in India. The Institute receives major private funding, side by side with substantial financial support from the Government of India.

**Pattern**

Chennai Mathematical Institute entrance exam will be 3 hours duration which is an aptitude test for mathematics at class 12 level . Both objective type questions and problem solving from the major topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, trigonometry and calculus.

Entrance Syllabus for BSc (Honours) Mathematics and Computer Science

**Algebra: **Arithmetic and geometric progressions, arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean and related inequalities, polynomial equations, roots of polynomials, matrices, determinants, linear equations, solvability of equations, binomial theorem and multinomial theorem, permutations and combinations, mathematical induction. primenumbers and divisibility, GCD, LCM, modular arithmetic logarithms, probability.

**Geometry:** Vectors, triangles, two dimensional geometry of Conics - straight lines, parabola, hyperbola, ellipses and circles, tangents, measurement of area and volume, co-ordinate geometry.

**Trigonometry:** addition, subtraction formulas, double-angle formulas.

**Calculus: ** Limits, continuity, derivatives, integrals, indeﬁnite and deﬁnite integrals, maxima and minima of functions in a single variable, series and sequences, convergence criterion.

When admissions are open, you may apply online or request a printed application form, either by post or in person. Selection for all Ph.D. programmes will involve an interview at Chennai. For all other programmes, interviews will be at the discretion of the Admissions Committee—the Committee may call shortlisted candidates for an interview depending on their prior academic record. All students receive handsome scholarships that meet all expenses. B.Sc. (Hons.) students receive a scholarship of Rs. 4000 per month, M.Sc. students receive a scholarship of Rs. 6000 per month and Ph.D. scholarships start at Rs. 16000 per month. Students of B.Sc. (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1000, made possible through generous private donations.
